Aneeta Madhok was our professor for “Business Ethics.” Before the course started, many classmates felt that the title of the course was an oxymoron. A few even went on to say that absence of ethics from business is almost definitional! They couldn’t have been more wrong.
In today’s world, the world where information flows at the speed of light, the importance of ethics in business is increasing exponentially. More critically, marketers are being subjected to increased scrutiny. This recent story on CNET about how Microsoft photoshopped the advertisements says a lot. Microsoft, or at least their marketers, seem to believe that Polish people can’t imagine a black man in a white-collar job! Microsoft PR guys moved in quickly and apologized. But imagine, without Internet would this misadventure have come to light so soon?
